FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Unsure about how we work? We have gathered the most common questions for your convenience.
A short consultation works well where you need legal input on a defined issue rather than a full drafting project. Common topics include whether your current structure still fits your activities, trustee or committee duties, constitution-related concerns, reporting questions, registration planning, conflicts in decision-making, or uncertainty about how a contract or policy affects the organisation. If the issue involves supporter, member or service-user information, it is important to explain how that information is collected, used and shared in practice, because that can affect the legal advice given.
This option is usually better where the main problem is not yet narrowed down to one document or one narrow eligibility question. For example, you may be weighing up structure options, trying to understand a governance problem, or deciding what legal step should come next. If you already know you need a constitution amended, a funding agreement reviewed, or a donor privacy document drafted, a more specific service may be more efficient. This consultation is there to help you identify the issue, understand the risks and decide on the right next move.
It is commonly booked by founders, trustees, committee members, directors of social enterprises and senior managers who need legal input before making a decision. Some organisations use it at setup stage when choosing between structures or considering registration. Others use it after a problem has surfaced, such as uncertainty about governance processes, concerns about responsibilities, or questions about whether current practices still match the organisation's purpose and activities. It is particularly useful where the organisation wants a lawyer to sense-check the issue before investing in more extensive legal work.
A short written summary is usually the most helpful starting point. That should explain what your organisation does, what legal structure it currently uses, and the questions you want covered in the consultation. If the issue relates to a particular document, send that as well. Useful examples include your constitution, articles, committee papers, a draft policy, or correspondence that has raised a compliance concern. Good background material helps keep the call focused on the legal issue itself instead of spending valuable time piecing together the facts during the session.
The fee covers a 30-minute consultation and a written follow-up summary of the main points discussed. It is intended for legal advice and issue-spotting on the questions you bring to the call. It does not cover drafting constitutions, policies, agreements or board papers, and it does not include contacting a regulator or another party on your behalf. Tax advice is also outside this service. If the consultation shows that further work would help, such as a document amendment or a deeper review, that can be quoted separately as a next step.
